A win for the Alumni ties up the “Knight Cup” series 2-2

The 4th Annual Rebel Golf Alumni Match took place on Sunday November 4th at Spanish Trail Country Club. A win for the Alumni Team would tie up the series and perhaps with that goal in sight, they assembled their strongest team in the history of the event to date in order to snatch back the “Knight Cup”.

JC Cortes hugs the Cup after an alumni victory.

JC (pictured above) arrived to UNLV in 1987 as a transfer from New Mexico along with Coach Knight and flew in from Chile to compete. He shot an admirable 73 on the Lakes and Canyon 9s at Spanish Trail CC.

At the top of the Alumni Team order were past winners on the PGA Tour, a Ryder Cupper and current PGA/Web.com Tour Members. However, things were not looking good for the Alumni Team favorites mid-way through the round until a heroic back nine Canyon 31 (-5) for Andres Gonzales turned the tide. John Oda was their low man with a 66 (-6) round of the day.  Also counting for the Alumni in the low 5 scores format was Andres Gonzales 68 (-4), Jeremy Anderson 71 (-1), Justin Lee 71 (-1) and AJ McInerney 71 (-1) totaling -13 team score. The low man for the Team came from Senior Captain, Harry Hall, who fired a 67 (-5) with Justin Kim shooting 68 (-4), Garrick Higgo and Justin Chong posting 71 (-1) and JJ Gresco a steady 72 (Even Par) round. -11 for the Team fell short of the -13 Alumni score.

Here are all the scores from the day…

The UNLV Men’s Golf coaches and team past and present would like to thank:

Spanish Trail CC ownership, members and staff (Robb Rizor Head Pro and Kathy Baldieri Catering Manager), The Rebel Golf Foundation Members & Board, Kathleen Williamson (Program Coordinator), Daron Dorsey (Knight Cup donation), Steve Spatafore (photos) and Mr. Scott Sibella of MGM Resorts who helped with accommodation for Alumni traveling in from out of town.
