NCAA Regional Highlights:
– Team Finished 3rd/14 teams
– 6th place finish for Senior Kurt Kitayama. Senior Carl Jonson & Senior Nico Maruri T-16.
– Senior Carl Jonson named “UNLV Male Scholar Athlete of the Year” & Senior Kurt Kitayama was recognized as a “UNLV Student-Athlete Academic Champion”
Congratulations to Carl Jonson for being named “UNLV Male Scholar Athlete of the Year” for all UNLV sports teams this past week. What a great honor ~ especially fitting for an outstanding young man! Kurt Kitayama was also named “UNLV Student-Athlete Academic Champion”. This is what a true college experience should be: high achievement in the classroom followed by high achievement on the golf course. It is not a strange coincidence that two of our lowest stroke average players also own the highest GPAs.
On the golf course last week, the team also produced a stellar performance for which we can be very proud. We played solid golf for all three rounds at the Sagamore Club in Noblesville, Indiana, and outstanding golf in the final round posting a 10 under par 278 which was the best round of the day and only one shot shy of the best round of the entire tournament. The last day was definitely one where we demonstrated how we “Finish like a Rebel”. We were led by Kurt Kitayama who finished in 6th place, Carl Jonson and Nico Maruri were T-16, AJ McInerney was T-21 and Shintaro Ban T-43.
The Sagamore Club, a Jack Nicklaus signature design, was a tough test that should help us prepare for the NCAA finals held May 29th – June 3 rd in Bradenton, Florida, over another Nicklaus design course called “The Concession Club. We are now very excited as we prepare for competing at the Finals with four players (Kurt, Carl, AJ & Nico) who reached the “Elite 8” in Georgia only two years ago. Thanks to all of you who sent congratulation messages and well wishes. In Las Vegas we are so fortunate to have the best support in all of college golf!
We were also made to feel at home with our member hosts Judy and John Partlow (pictured). They hosted the team for dinner at their home which borders the 6th fairway and proudly displays a “Hey Reb” UNLV flag.
Warm regards to One & All,
Coach Dwaine Knight, your Coaches and Team
