It was just another good day to be a Rebel recently when the Mountain West Conference season awards were announced. Several players and UNLV head coach were honored with awards.
Knight was named conference coach of the year. He was joined as an award winner by junior John Oda, who was selected as the league’s Player of the Year.
Junior Shintaro Ban, sophomore Harry Hall and Oda were all tabbed all-conference performers. The awards were selected by the MW’s 11 head coaches.
Oda’s Player of the Year honor marked the first for a Rebel golfer since Derek Ernst won it in 2011. Oda is the fourth different Rebel to win the MW award.
This year marks Oda’s third all-conference honor, while it is the second for Ban and Hall.
The No. 16 Rebels are coming off a second straight Mountain West Championship on Sunday and are waiting to find out their seed and site for the NCAA Regional, which starts Monday, May 15. The selections will be announced on Thursday, May 4. It will mark UNLV’s NCAA-record 29th straight appearance in the postseason.
The back-to-back titles are the first for UNLV since joining the MW. In 12 tournaments this year, the Rebels have recorded two team victories, four runner-up finishes, two thirds and a fourth-place finish for a total of nine top-five performances.
Knight, who is in his 30th season leading the program, has also been named the MW Coach of the Year in 2002, the WAC Coach of the Year in 1998 and the Big West Coach of the Year in 1989.
Oda, from Honolulu, Hawaii, is currently ranked 15th in the nation by Golfstat and 27th by Golfweek. He leads the Rebels and the MW in scoring average this season at 70.26 per round. He won two individual tournament titles and tallied a total of 10 top-10 finishes in 13 tournaments played. In addition, he has finished ninth or better in each of his last seven events. He has also recorded 16 out of his 39 rounds played in the 60s and shot par or better in 27 of them.
Ban, from San Jose, Calif., is second on the team in scoring average at 71.06 per round. He has recorded six top-10 individual finishes this year with his top performance being a tie for second. In 36 total rounds, he has 10 in the 60s and has shot par or better in 24.
